The Oxen Stumbled

Mike Patz Nov 10, 2025

After many long years of struggle with Saul, David is now the king of Israel. David has tasted and seen that the Lord is good, and he wants the Presence of God back.

As we continue the Gospel According to David series, Pastor Mike Patz opens the word to the story found in 1 Chronicles 13. David begins to move the Ark of the Covenant back to its rightful place, and as the cart hits a bump in the road, the oxen stumbled. The Ark represented the glory, mercy, and presence of God, and was never to be touched by man.

When you’re in the presence of God there is comfort, and nothing else matters. Ever since the Garden of Eden we know something is missing. God’s presence can’t be carried on human carts, there must be holiness. To get back to that place of joy and peace, it begins with reverence to God’s sacred ways. The fear of the Lord prepares and lays the ground work for God’s presence to come.

“You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.” — St Augustine.
